Cafe Cocomo To Remain Open Until At Least November

UPDATE: The latest word is that Cocomo will be closing after Sunday, September 14th.

Surprise surprise! Cafe Cocomo, one of the Bay Area’s most iconic salsa dancing venues, has just announced that they will not be closing until November (at least).

Cafe Cocomo first announced that they would be closing back in May, when the property was sold to developers to make way for condos. Since then, the closing date has been pushed back multiple times, and now the latest news is that Cocomo will be open until at least November.

The reason for the delays is believed to be that the new owners have not been able to get the construction permits it needs to begin tearing down Cocomo and begin construction of the new development. Given San Francisco’s convoluted permit process, that could take a while. In the meantime, Cafe Cocomo will continue to keep its doors open for dancers.

The future of live music salsa venues in San Francisco once Cafe Cocomo closes remains uncertain. A number of new venues have opened up in San Francisco recently, including Yerba Buena & Verdi Club that promise to host live music once Cocomo closes. The managers of Cocomo are also looking to open a new venue somewhere else in the City once the current location closes.

In the meantime, you can continue dancing at Cafe Cocomo practically every night of the week!
